On February 25, 2019 a new rule takes effect that is requiring owners and operators of sUAS will no longer place registration numbers on the interior compartment.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) posted a rule in the Federal Register requiring small drone operators to place their registration numbers on the outside of the aircraft.

Originally the FAA required operators to place the required markings someplace on the aircraft that would be easily accessible, which could be in the battery compartment. However; after getting some comment, the FAA noticed that there are some risks to this concept for first responders. The inconvenience to operators does not outweigh the risk. Therefore this interim final rule is in effect.

An easy “DIY” way to do this is print out a small piece of paper with your sUAS SN and your FAA registration number on it. Place on the outside of your aircraft, then put a piece of tape over it (see picture above). This method works on the majority of aircraft, to include the smaller sUAS models.

The FAA will consider comments from the public on the Interim Final Rule at http://www.regulations.gov and search for “RIM 2120-AL32”. You can submit your comments now through April 15, 2019.
